There is really very little one needs to know about how
to apply lotion. Sunless tanning lotions are different,
however, and there are some definite steps one must take
for the proper application of sunless tanning lotion. It
is important that the sunless tanner apply the lotion
correctly to achieve a dark and beautiful sunless tan.
Failure to do so can result in an uneven and blotchy tan
that will definitely be something other than the desired
result. No one wants a blotchy tan, after all. Following
these steps and the particular manufacturer’s directions
will result in exactly the desired tan.
It may be interesting to understand what sunless tanning
lotion is before learning to apply lotion. Sunless
tanning lotion is a type of lotion that produces a “fake
tan” by basically staining the skin to give a tanned
appearance. There have been great advancements in this
area in recent years, allowing for far better formulas
than the old QT quick tanning lotion (which tended to
make people look more like the Oompa Loompas from Willie
Wonka and the Chocolate Factory than George Hamilton)
and a more realistic tan.
These lotions work by “staining” the skin, but it is a
slowly developing color in most cases. It takes between
thirty and forty five minutes to turn white skin tan.
This is a good thing because, although you can’t just
“tan and go,” at least you have time to wash the
solution off of the palms of your hands.
When you apply lotion sunless tanning you are
essentially using a form of sugar to stain the skin. The
sugar (dihydroxyacetone or DHA) reacts with the skin
cells of the epidermis and a chemical reaction occurs,
causing the change in color. This is why the tanned
appearance is able to last for several days. As the skin
cells become replaced, the tan fades.
Follow these steps to apply lotion. Sunless tanning
lotion comes in a tube or bottle that you can
conveniently squeeze. Squeeze a generous amount into the
palm of your hand and start rubbing it into your skin as
evenly as possible. Of course you may need assistance
from a partner or friend to get the areas you can’t
reach yourself. Once your body is covered you will need
to allow the lotion to dry. After that, about forty five
minutes to an hour later, you should look like you’ve
been basking in the sun for days.
When you apply lotion for sunless tanning you may find
manufacturers instructions that differ slightly from the
steps seen here. Obviously the instructions on the
particular product you’re using should supercede the
steps given here as this article is merely a general
informative guide.
There are also different types of sunless tanning lotion
on the market. A non DHA “bronzer” will be applied in
much the same way, but provides a tan that can be washed
off with simple soap and water. DHA sunless tanning
lotions provide a tan that will last for several days
and can not be washed off.
