How To Apply Sunless Tanning Lotion

Avoid The Orange Streaks: Learn How To Apply Sunless Tanning Lotion Correctly

For all your afraid pale people out there who haven't yet tried sunless tanning because they weren't sure of how to apply sunless tanning lotion properly, you could potentially be risking some ugly after-effects. Here's a few tips on how to apply sunless tanning lotion properly, and as accident free as possible.

Budget Your Time

The most important thing to keep in mind whether you are learning how to apply sunless tanning lotion for the first time or you are a nicely-browned, seasoned tanning veteran, is that it takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours to complete the application process from start to finish. Rushing the process could cost you your favorite outfit, or even worse you could get stuck with bright orange or yellow skin for 3 to 5 days.

Scrub Down

The first thing you want to do when preparing to apply sunless tanning lotion is to take a long, hot shower or bath. Use a bath sponge or wash cloth to gently scrub your skin, removing the dead skin cells, leaving it even and smooth. Pay a little closer attention to the rougher parts of the body, like the shins, heels, elbows, and knees. After bathing, it is recommended that you apply a small amount of body lotion, to smooth the skin and ease the sunless tanning process. Apply a slightly larger amount of lotion to areas with thicker skin that you don't want to come out darker than the rest of your tan, such as knees and elbows.

Work Your Way Down

If you are learning how to apply sunless tanning lotion for the first time or if you have done it before and you are just not entirely comfortable with the process yet, it is best to work your way up from the bottom. Start out applying your sunless tanner to one area of your body at a time, starting out by applying the lotion to your feet and legs (one leg at a time, of course). You can apply a little less tanner to your hands and feet, but be careful not to let it stain the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet. Circular strokes usually get better results than vigorous rubbing of the skin.

Pull Up A Chair

To avoid irregular drying or streaking, it's not generally a good idea to do much while your sunless tanner is drying. Attempting to get dressed would not only ruin your street clothes, but it would ruin your brand new tan as well, so it's best to look at a magazine, watch television, or something equally physically uninvolved during the first hour after application. Try not to rub on the skin, sweat, or wear clothes that excessively rub against the skin for at least 3 hours after completing the application.

Just a tip:

Rinse your hands often as you apply the sunless tanner to your body, just to make sure you're not left with tell-tale orange palms and a conspicuously perfect tan. It's also a good idea to have a nail brush handy should you happen to let sunless tanner seep under your nails.
