Tanning Bed Bulbs
Tanning Beds and 100, 75, 50, and 20 Watt Tanning Bed Bulbs
Tanning beds with 20 watt tanning bed bulbs are a
rarity. Most tanning beds used in salons and health
clubs utilize bulbs of at least 75, and usually 100
watts. The stronger the bulb, the quicker the customer
achieves the desired tan. The larger and more powerful
the lamp or bulb, however, the greater the risks
associated with indoor tanning. This creates a fine line
that the tanning salon owner must walk and that the
tanning customer must contend with.
20 watt tanning bed bulbs are comparatively low powered
and, as such, represent a lower risk for the negative
effects associated with tanning. If you’re using a bed
with a 20 watt tanning bed bulb, however, it does not
mean that you are able to remain exposed to the UV rays
for an extended period of time.
Each power level has recommended exposure times that
should be adhered to. Lower wattage bulbs do not mean
that tanners can forego the protective eyewear either.
UV rays, even from a 20 watt tanning bed bulb, can cause
severe eye problems, including blindness.
Owners of residential tanning beds often find that the
machines they purchase come equipped with 20 watt
tanning bed bulbs. These owners are sometimes annoyed to
find that they’ve purchased a bed with low-wattage
bulbs. They may immediately start looking for
higher-wattage replacements. Whether this is advisable
depends entirely on the model of tanning bed.
Some beds are designed to be able to use bulbs of
various wattages while others are designed specifically
for 100, 75, 40, or 20 watt tanning bed bulbs. To use a
higher wattage bulb in a bed designed for use with a 20
watt tanning bed bulb may be a mistake. The more
powerful bulb could short out the bed entirely,
rendering it useless (and voiding the warranty in the
process, if there is one), or may present a fire hazard.
If you buy a residential tanning bed, be sure to use
only the appropriate bulbs as recommended by the
manufacturer.
20 watt tanning bed bulbs as well as bulbs and lamps in
other wattages can be purchased from licensed tanning
bed dealers or, in some cases, directly from the tanning
bed manufacturer. Many online dealers also specialize in
tanning bed lamps and other tanning bed accessories and
lotions. These are purchased via mail order and it is
important that you inspect the package for damage when
it is delivered. If a tanning bed bulb arrives broken,
you may have difficulty getting it replaced without the
corroboration of the delivery driver.
20 watt tanning bed bulbs are not used in very many
tanning beds, but when they are they are still perfectly
capable of delivering a dark, rich tan. Don’t let the
lower wattage fool you into thinking that there are
fewer risks associated with overexposure and don’t
replace 20 watt tanning bed bulbs with 120 watt tanning
bed bulbs unless you know that your particular model of
tanning bed is designed to work with them.
